Thailand Jan 2009 (3 of 5)
Kanchanaburi located on the River Kwai and is home to the infamous "Death Railway Bridge" built during WWII
Sunrise over the River Kwai. Everywhere we went in Thailand the sunrises and sunsets were quite pretty, owing to the horrible air quality.
We stayed in a nice bungalow right over a small channel of the river. It was nice and peaceful and the birdwatching from the porch was good.
We took a trip to the Erawan National Park, where the main attraction is a series of waterfalls, very scenic and great for swimming. We got there early and had the place more or less to ourselves. Waterfall #4 (of 7) had great slides.
Waterfall #5 had some great soaking pools as well.
Our last activity here was to spend a couple hours floating down the river, which was quite nice. The river was considerably cleaner than others we had seen. The scenery was nice, and it was good to be away from the maddening crowds.
We rode bicycles up to the famous bridge, and walked across. It was a popular spot with the westernen and Thai tourists alike. We wondered how many people would be there if the movie had bombed back in 1957.
There is a Western (British and Australian) and a Chinese cemetary not too far from the bridge, where many of the POWs who worked on the railway are buried. The western cemetary was quite tidy, but very simple. The Chinese graves were much more decorated, although not as well kept.
The float ended at the local Chinese Temple, which was itself a fantastically decirated treat that we checked out after getting off the river.
