Tasmania Jan 2008 (3 of 4)
A highlight of our Tasmanian journey was the kayak trip to Bathurst Harbour in the remote Southwest Naional Park, which commenced with a scenic flight from Hobart. As you can see we had a great view of Federation Peak.
Here's a view of Bathurst Harbour, or at least part of it, from the air. Very open, scenic country, not many trees to clutter up the view.
I must say the weather for our second day of paddling was quite well planned by the guides. We went out through the Bathurst Narrows with the outgoing tide and absolutely no wind.
We lunched at scenic Balmoral Beach. Looks quite tropical, no? Actually the beach is made of decomposing rock, and the weather is rarely anything resembling tropical. Luck was with us, we had a warm and calm day.
The weather prediction was for a following wind on our return paddle. Zane thought a sail would be useful in these conditions, so he set to work (with a bit of help from Mom).
When you are in Bathurst Harbour, you are never far away from Mt. Rugby, which is apparently named for Lord Rugby and not the football game.
We had two and a half days of paddling, through a wide range of conditions. Hot, cool, windy, warm. No rain to speak of though, which was fine with us.
Success! We sailed most of the way back to camp.
Special thanks to Toby, Nathan, and the crew at Roaring 40's for providing a great trip.
